Memorial Cross, Wedmore, Somerset, c1955. Stone memorial commemorating the First and Second World Wars. Wedmore is best known as the place where King Alfred made peace with the Danes in 878 after defeating them at the Battle of Edington. The treaty signed divided England between Alfred's Wessex and the Danelaw, ruled by Guthrum.
