Invasion of Herr's Island, (Pitssburgh) by water and ice floes from the Alleghany River, Pennsylvania, United States, February 2 and 3, 1883. A violent snowstorm developed into torrential rains, causing the ice mountains flanking the banks of the Alleghany River, extending eight miles to Pittsburgh, to break up. Ice floes, large in size, were swept down the river causing floods. From "La Ilustración Española y Americana" (The Spanish and American Illustration), 8 March 1883.
