Historical Scene, 1650. Trial by Fire Saint Cunigunde of Luxembourg was accused of being unfaithful to her husband, the Holy Roman Emperor. To prove her innocence, she stood or walked barefoot on red-hot metal. In Lely’s painting a young woman is standing on red-hot coals before an Oriental ruler, among the spectators are men wearing turbans and little Moorish boys, while in the background there is a statue of Justice.
