Christ carrying the Cross contemplated by Mary and the Christian Soul, 1630. Depiction of one of Christ's falls on his ascent to Mount Calvary, where his Passion will culminate in death on the cross. He wears a thick rope around his neck and a crown of thorns on his head. To the right, the Virgin Mary and a girl of ten or twelve years old are praying devoutly. The girl's placement, brightly illuminated and in the foreground, close to the viewer, makes her an invitation to prayer and introspection linked to the Passion of Christ. She has been identified with Diriksen's daughter.
