Charles Martel, 7th century King of the Franks, 19th century. Charles Martel (the Hammer) (c688-741) depicted in a chain mail tunic carrying a mace and shield. Founder of the Carolingian dynasty and grandfather of Charlemagne, he defeated the Moors at the Battle of Poitiers in 732, turning back their expansion north of the Pyrenees.
