Beachy Head, Sussex, c1955. Landmark for sailors in the English Channel. The name is a corruption of the original French words meaning 'beautiful headland' (beau chef). At one time Beachy Head was the third most common suicide spot in the world. The earliest reports of deaths by suicide here come from the 7th century.
