Christ on the way to Calvary and Saint Veronica, c1660. Biblical scene from the Passion of Christ: Jesus Christ falls on the way to Calvary. Simon of Cyrene tries to help him with the Cross, while a henchman comes to violently whip him. Veronica, standing to his right, has already wiped his face, the image of which is imprinted on the cloth she holds in her hands. Jesus turns toward the viewer with a sad and serene expression, which contrasts with the tension and pain of the other figures. In the background, on the right, is a group centred on the Virgin, showing her sorrow, and behind her the thieves are led by soldiers. The figure wearing a turban on the left probably alludes to paganism or Judaism.
