King David, c1525. One of four panels depicting Old Testament prophets before a parapet, belonging to the predella of an altarpiece. The Master of Becerril was receptive to the influence of Italian art, which he must have accessed indirectly through engravings. Proof of this lies in his fondness for depicting Renaissance architecture in his paintings, frequently incorporating sculptures or reliefs to which he attributed symbolic meaning. In the background are ruined buildings and rocks.
