Sacrifice of Isaac, 1668. Biblical scene: God commanded Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, but a messenger from God stops Abraham before he can complete the sacrifice, saying, "now I know you fear God". Abraham sees a ram and sacrifices it instead of Isaac. One of a series of canvases depicting episodes from the Old Testament, painted by Escalante between 1667 and 1668 for the sacristy of the Merced Calzada in Madrid.
