'The Last Respects to the Remains of the Counts Egmont and Hoorn', 1863. Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522-1568) and Philip of Montmorency, Count Hoorn (1518-1568), were two popular Dutch Protestant leaders who were publicly beheaded by the Spanish rulers of the Netherlands in Brussels on 5 June 1568. Their execution was one of the catalysts that sparked the revolution that brought about the independence of the Netherlands. Found in the collection of the State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.
