'The Holy Family', 1640, (1967). Alternative title: The Holy Family with Saint Anne, Mother of the Virgin. Mary is placed in the brightest light, with the infant Jesus at his mother's breast. Anne looks up from the Bible she is reading, while Joseph, the poor carpenter, works by an open window. A glass on the sill catches the light pouring in from outside. In the background gloom is a bed in an alcove, and a cat by the fire. The attribution of the work to Rembrandt is problematic; it could well be the work of a highly gifted pupil like Bol - working alongside the master and strongly influenced by him.
