The Great Wall, Pekin', China, 1895. View of the wall at what is now known as Beijing. Built on China's northern border to keep out Turkic and Mongol raiders, parts of the Great Wall date back to the 4th century BC. Most of the best preserved sections of the wall that exist today were rebuilt in the 15th and 16th century during the Ming dynasty. Stretching from the Gulf of Chih Li (Bo Hai) in the east, into the heart of Central Asia, the Great Wall was some 4000 miles long in total.
