'The Battle of Borodino', 1812, (1829), (1850). The battle of Borodino was fought outside Moscow on 7 September 1812, before Napoleon's army entered the city on 14 September. Napoleon is standing by his famous horse, Marengo, with his cavalry commander Marshal Murat to the left. Moscow would later be burned by the Russians, and the French had to endure a terrible retreat through the winter snows.
