'St. Augustine Before Ethelbert.', (mid 19th century). Depiction of Ethelbert, king of Kent, dressed as a Germanic warrior, looking down towards St Augustine and his entourage of monks. Queen Bertha is at Ethelbert's knee, supporting Augustine's message. Augustine (died 604 AD) landed on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent in 597. Ethelbert (c560-614) converted to Christianity shortly afterwards, the first English king to do so. [John Tallis & Company, London & New York]
