'Simeon in the Temple', c1628-1629, (1967). Biblical scene. The aged Simeon has come to the temple wishing, before his death, to see the future Redeemer. Simeon, full of gratitude, holds the child Jesus in his arms and kneels as he announces his message to Mary who kneels with hands clasped. Joseph, in profile, is kneeling to the left. Above them with arms raised stands Anna, the aged widow who, liked Simeon, served faithfully and was given the privilege of seeing the Christ Child. Anna bears the features of Rembrandt's mother.
