Shipwrecked people arriving on the shore, 1793. Alternative title: Shipwreck Survivors reaching the Coast. Depiction of survivors being pulled from the wreckage of a vessel that has crashed against coastal reefs. The anecdote, described with excellent narrative sense through painting, is a reflection of the themes popularized by Claude-Joseph Vernet, which depict maritime disasters combining the novelistic atmosphere of the struggle for survival with the more frequent adventure stories. Here we are presented with imposing rocky cliffs, broken masts, destructive waves, overcast skies, and gesticulating figures that express terror and despair.
