Saint Teresa and her brother Don Rodrigo attempting to build hermitages, 1735. The scene depicts Saint Teresa of Jesus accompanied by her brother Rodrigo and small cherubs. They are carrying stones to build chapels in the garden of her house, of which she speaks in her Book of Life: 'in a garden at home we tried, as best we could, to build chapels by putting in small stones, which then fell out'. In the background is a landscape with a waterwheel, which did in fact exist in Teresa's house. This painting is from a series of works dedicated to the life of Teresa and was painted for a Carmelite community.
