Saint Francis raising a girl from the dead, c1788-c1789. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), the founder of the Franciscan Order, resurrects a girl. The passages in the hagiography of Saint Francis that recount resurrections or miracles of dead children are numerous. Thomas of Celano 's Treatise on Miracles lists as many as five, all recorded during the 13th century. The scene depicted could be any one of these or simply a generic representation in which a group of women carry a dead girl into the presence of the saint.
