Cromwell's Castle and Shipman's Head, Tresco, Scilly Isles, c1955. Cromwell's Castle is an artillery fort, built c1652, overlooking New Grimsby harbour. The gun-ports allowed the battery a good angle of fire across the channel between the islands of Bryher and Tresco. Shipman Head is one of the wildest parts of Bryher island, being exposed to the wild Atlantic to the north and west. The 'waved' maritime heathland is particularly important for some rare lichen species.
