Christopher Columbus, (1451-1506), Navigator, cartographer and admiral, 1892. He served the Crown of Castile. Discoverer of America in 1492. Facsimile of an illustration from one of the letters of 1493 announcing the discovery of the Indies, an Italian version printed in Florence. Landfall of the expedition led by Columbus, who is depicted at the bow of his ship, the Santa María. Ferdinand II, King of Spain, is shown pointing across the Atlantic to the place where Columbus disembarks with three ships among a large group of indigenous people. From "America.
