Approval of the Franciscan Rule by Pope Innocent III, c1789. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) founded three religious orders and gave each of them a special rule. He submitted the rule of the first order, that of the Order of Friars Minor - commonly called the Franciscans, to Pope Innocent III for approval in 1209. Innocent III gave it verbal approval on April 23 of that year.
