'Hannah and Samuel', 1648, (1967). Alternative title: Hannah and Samuel in the temple. The subject of this picture is probably the prophetess Hannah teaching her son Samuel, although it has at times been thought to be Anna at Christ's Presentation in the Temple. The model for the child may have been Rembrandt's son Titus. The writing on the two tablets in the background is difficult to decipher, but shows the Ten Commandments in Hebrew.
