Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, c1955. Village of listed flint-built cottages with the Stag & Huntsman pub and a Shell garage on the right. The village name is Anglo-Saxon in origin, and means 'crooked or irregularly-shaped hill'. It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hanbledene, though previously in 1015 it was known as Hamelan dene.
