House at Philadelphia in which the first congresses were held, 19th-century. Independence Hall, (initially called Pennsylvania State House), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Building constructed between 1732 and 1753, designed by Edmund Woolley, (c1695-1771) and Andrew Hamilton, (c1676-1741), and built by Woolley. The Founding Fathers gathered there for the Second Continental Congress (1775-1781) during the American Revolutionary War, adopting the Declaration of Independence, (4 July 1776) and, later, ratifying the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution of the United States of America.
