First miracle of Saint Teresa of Jesus: Resurrection of her nephew, Don Gonzalo Ovalle, son of her sister, Doña Juana de Ahumada, 1855. Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) was a Doctor of the Church and reformer of the Carmelite Order. In 1561, Teresa's young nephew Gonzalo de Ovalle was found dead in his house in Ávila, which was being converted into a Carmelite convent. The boy was revived after her prayers. The theatricality and declamatory nature of the figures' poses contrasts with the realism of the tiled floor in need of repair, the holy water font, the peeling paint on the wall, and workmen in the background.
