The Assumption of the Virgin, 1651. Alternative title: The Dormition of the Virgin. The Dormition of the Mother of God is a Great Feast of the Eastern Churches and celebrates the "falling asleep" (death) of Mary, and her being taken up into heaven. In Western Churches the corresponding feast is known as the Assumption of Mary. Christian canonical scriptures do not record the death, Dormition or Assumption of Mary.
