Oath of office of the governor and captain general of Santo Domingo, Pedro Santana, 1862. Swearing-in of Don Pedro Santana. Pedro Santana Familias (1801-1864), military officer and politician, was the first president of the Dominican Republic until its annexation to Spain in 1861. He then took the oath of office as governor with the rank of captain general of the territory, a position he held until 1862. He swore his oath before a canopy portrait of Queen Isabella II.
