Festival of Britain, South Bank, London, c1951. The Skylon was a futuristic-looking, slender, vertical, cigar-shaped steel tensegrity structure, that gave the illusion of floating above the ground. It was built on the South Bank in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. It is seen here reflected in the waters of the River Thames.
