'The telegram stating that British marines were to be landed at Corinto if the President of Nicaragua persisted in refusing to pay the indemnity of £15,000 demanded by the British Government has caused many people to inquire where that place is situated. On hearing that it was a Nicaraguan port on the Pacific, they have wondered why our ships should be sent there to insist on reparation for an offence committed at Bluefields on the Atlantic...The answer is that Corinto is the port from which the capital, Managua, is most accessible...the church...is the only conspicuous building in the place...A British landing at Corinto would not affect the Nicaraguan Canal, even if it were finished and working, instead of being still in nubibus. It is proposed to start it at Brito, which is just above San Juan del Sur, and fully a hundred miles south of Corinto. From Brito it is to go to the lower part of Lake Nicaragua; and on the other side of the lake it will follow the course of the San Juan River to San Juan del Norte or Greytown, keeping all the way pretty close to the 11th parallel'.
