The Covenanter's Baptism, 1831.A baptism taking place secretly in a secluded spot in the hills. The Covenanters wanted to defend their religion against the liturgy imposed by Charles I and held meetings outdoors to escape persecution. Here, the congregation watches as the minister sprinkles water from the burn onto the baby's head. On the fringes, men with spears stand ready to protect the Covenanters from intruders.
