This residence, originally known as Adelaide House, was constructed for Dr William Hobbs, the ship's surgeon on board the Chasely. In 1853 Hobbs commissioned Andrew Petrie to build a two storey house on a hill overlooking the river. This photograph was taken after extensive excavations were done around 1880 leaving The Deanery (formerly Adelaide House) with very little frontage. Dr Hobbs and his family moved away in 1883.
