Letter from President George Washington to the Earl of Buchan, 1793. '...to be inhabited by a young member of the family as soon as the house which some years ago was burnt can be rebuilt. - With great esteem & respect I have the honor to be your Lordships most Obed. Hble. Servant, G. Washington'. Washington's letter to the sympathetic Earl of Buchan sets out the policy of the recently independent United States 'to be little heard of in world affairs'. It also includes the plan for a new city, which today bears Washington's name.
