Endeavours River with the Vessel hauled on the Shore, 1770, (late 18th century). After leaving Botany Bay, Captain James Cook's ship the Endeavour ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef, and he was forced to stop in the Endeavour River to effect repairs. The expedition artist, Sydney Parkinson, drew this view which is the first know depiction of Australia's landscape. A settlement, (now Cooktown, Queensland), was established near this site.
