'Battle of Lake Erie', (1878). 'If a Victory is to be Gained I'll Gain it', a quote from Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry, shown here standing in a rowing boat as he goes from the US Brig 'Lawrence' to the US Brig 'Niagara'. US naval commander Perry (1785-1819) gained victory over the British on 10 September 1813 at the Battle of Lake Erie. The Americans won control of the lake, enabling them to recapture Detroit.
