On the ground is a pair of pattens, medieval platform shoes. 19th century illustration after a miniature from "De Mulieribus claris" by Boccaccio, in the Bibliotheque d'Arsenal in Paris. The book was made for Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. From Volume 2 of "Le Moyen Age Et La Renaissance", (The Middle Ages and the Renaissance), edited by Paul Lacroix, artistic direction by Ferdinand Seré [Paris, 1849]
