'The Fortune Theatre', (c1872). The Fortune Playhouse in Golden Lane, just outside the City of London, was founded c1600. It was the scene of riots and assaults, and in 1639 the actors were fined £1000 for depicting a religious ceremony on stage. It was suppressed by the Puritan Parliament in 1642. By the time of the Restoration the building had partially collapsed. It was demolished in 1660.
