The Gates of Paradise, Baptistry, Florence, Italy, 1425-1452. Detail of Lorenzo Ghiberti's bronze doors to the Baptistry of St John. The doors show biblical scenes; illustrated here are the story of Cain and Abel (top), and Abraham and Isaac (below). The Baptistry is thought to be the oldest building in Florence, dating from the 6th or 7th century.
