View of Mount Beshtau from the Mashuk, 1934. Scene of the duel between the poet Mikhail Lermontov and his military schoolmate Nikolai Martynov. Martynov fatally shot Lermontov in a cliff-edge duel on July 27 1841, in the Caucasus town of Pyatigorsk, despite Lermontov's supposedly having made it known that he was going to shoot into the air. Found in the collection of Institut of Russian Literature IRLI (Pushkin-House), St Petersburg.
