Vase of Flowers, first quarter of the 17th century. Three roses and five tulips are combined with small flowers of Narcissus tazetta and Myosotis scorpioides; a ladybird, a butterfly and caterpillars bring this set to life. The buds, chrysalides, and the newly emerged butterflies attempting to reproduce anew intentionally underscore the concept of the fragility of life, already implicit in the flowers.
