Undine, 1875-1887. This small scale bronze depicts an Undine, a water nymph. According to legend, Undines cannot get a soul unless they marry a man and bear him a child. Carrier Belleuse emphasises the sensual nature of this mythical being, as her fleshy sinuous curves emerge from tall water reeds.
