The Roman arena in Arles, Provence, France, in 1666 (1882-1884). The Roman amphitheatre in Arles was built in the 1st century BC. Over 20,000 spectators could be accommodated to watch chariot racing, gladiatorial combat and other entertainment. After the fall of Roman rule in Gaul, the amphitheatre was converted into a fortress. Houses were built within the structure, effectively turning it into a small town. In the 19th century at the instigation of the writer Prosper Merimee, the houses were demolished and the amphitheatre was restored to its original condition.
