The Lutheran Cathedral seen from the South Harbour, Helsinki, Finland, 2011. Helsinki Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko), also known as the Cathedral of St Nicholas, was designed by by Carl Engel and built between 1830 and 1852. Finland was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire from 1809 until 1917. The building directly in front of the cathedral is Helsinki City Hall.
