'The building itself contains one acre of ground, and is, in plan, of the form of a "trefoil", wholly composed of glass, arranged in the "ridge-and-furrow" plan...The whole of the design, arrangements, and management of this splendid pile are under the direction of Mr. [Joseph] Paxton, head gardener to his Grace the Duke of Devonshire...'.
