'The Derby 1863 - Portrait of The Winner', 1863. A topical cartoon from Punch. Palmerston, trainer of the British people, welcomes home the Derby winner. The rider is John Bull, representative of the British Constitution - a winner despite being weighed down by a mighty tax belt. He has clearly come in ahead of the warring Americans, the problems of the Pope and the difficulties between Italy and France, Russia and Poland - sketches of all of whom can be seen in the background. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 23, 1863.
