'The Battle of Neuve Chapelle', (1919). Annotated landscape of the village of Neuve-Chapelle and surrounding countryside in northern France during the First World War. 'The attack and capture of Neuve Chapelle [10-13 March 1915] marked the beginning of the British Offensive. As a preliminary to the attack a furious cannonade of shells was hurled against the German trenches, such as had never before been seen or heard. Five hundred guns and more rained a torrent of shell upon the German positions.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. V, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight.
