The arrest of Sir Roger Mortimer, Nottingham Castle, 1330 (1864). Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March (1287-1330), and his lover Isabella of France led a successful invasion of England to overthrow King Edward II, Isabella's husband, in 1326. He governed the country until Edward's son, Edward III (1312-1377), overthrew him with the support of the barons in 1330 after Mortimer executed the Duke of Kent, the late King Edward II's half brother, for treason. Seized in Nottingham Castle, Mortimer was executed and Isabella imprisoned.
