St Laurence before Decius's tribunal (detail), mid 15th century. St Laurence (d258), saint and martyr, was Deacon of the Christian church in Rome. He faced persecution under the Emperor Decius (249-251). Later, under the persecution of Valerian he was condemned to death by being broiled.
