'Philip Sidney was happily sheltered in the house of Sir Francis Walsingham, the English Ambassador in Paris, on the night of August 24, 1572, a night made for ever memorable by the massacre of St. Bartholomew, or he might have fallen a victim to the intolerance of the times'.
