Runners at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, 1936. Athletics during Hitler's tenure as Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. Eighteen Black athletes represented the United States in the 1936 Olympics. African-Americans dominated the popular track and field events. Middle-distance runner John Woodruff (1915-2007) won the 800 meters. Many American journalists hailed the victories of Jesse Owens and other Black athletes as a blow to the Nazi myth of Aryan supremacy. 'There were some spectacular efforts put together in the name of international sportsmanship'.
