Queen Isabella the Catholic, 17th century. Queen Isabella I of Castile (1451-1504), also known as Isabella the Catholic, was the daughter of King John II of Castile and the successor to her half-brother, King Henry IV of Castile. She was Queen of Castile and León, and Queen of Aragon as the wife of King Ferdinand II. Her reign marked the end of the Reconquista (the overthrow of Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula) and also the start of the Spanish Empire.
